Milk producer, Robert Wiseman, is currently enjoying the land of milk and honey. Continuing five years of solid profits and turnover growth, Wiseman unveiled a strong performance at the interim stage. In an industry where supermarkets have become the dominant retailers of milk, and the subsequent pressure on reducing the number of suppliers and squeezing margins, Wiseman increased pre-tax profits by 12% to £10.27m on turnover up 17.8% to £139.7m. With its heartland in Scotland, the group has increasingly sought further pastures in the south. The plant in Manchester, and recent permission to build another one in Droitwich, offer its supermarket customers dedicated facilities and promise Wiseman further economies of scale. Controlled by the Wiseman family, the dairy believes it can continue to increase volume, which rose 24.6% to 360m litres at the halfway stage. Indeed, chairman Alan Wiseman added that 'it's all about volume' and that the group intends to sharpen its focus on its supermarket custom. Moreover, there is increasing speculation that the industry as a whole is moving towards further consolidation.
