Tipped here twice in 2004 (at 10.75p and then 27.5p), Mercury Recycling shares have been up to 40p in the past year. With the market pullback they have slid back to 27.5p after a set of figures showing real progress. Turnover rose by a third last year, to £2.15 million, and there was a profit of £268,000 before goodwill and relocation costs.
Mercury’s new site at Trafford Park, Manchester, offers the potential for much expanded throughput. Its problem has been that the UK government has delayed implementing a key EU directive which would require all gas discharge lamps to be recycled. Mercury now expects the directive to become law later this year or early next. It looks worth waiting for. Hold.
