Mobile communication device specialist Synchronica says other deals will follow a milestone Swedish software licence agreement.
Bombed-out Synchronica, the remnant of the ill-starred and services venture DAT Group, recently agreed to licence a core component of its Mobile Manager Suite to SmartTrust AB of Sweden, a leader in ‘mobile device management solutions’ backed by the Carlyle group. Chief executive Carsten Brinkschulte, who originally founded the company in Berlin and later took it in hand when DAT lost its way, says this deal will yield an €800,000 licence fee plus up to €200,000 a year in extra support payments and represents the ‘largest single transaction in the company’s history’.
Brinkschulte says Synchronica is working on several other licensing deals for Mobile Manager and hopes in the longer term to license it to end users. He says new deals are also in prospect for the company’s Mobile Gateway product, which uses Microsoft’s secure Outlook Web Access to retrieve emails from corporate exchange servers and deliver them directly to built-in email clients of the Apple iPhone.
Synchronica is also investigating possibilities in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the developing world, which, says Brinkschulte, is manifesting a surprising interest in introducing mobile email services. He runs the company, whose operations are in Berlin, from London.
Shares in Synchronica, whose losses more than doubled to £6.5 million last year on sharply reduced turnover of £1.1 million, have collapsed from 530p in DAT’s heyday to 9.5p today, valuing the company at £7.6 million. Recovery prospects hinge on the company’s continuing ability to keep its technical edge and strike as many cash-generative deals as possible without delay.
