Prince Michael of Kent has helped launch the Oxus Gold Scholarship Foundation at the Embassy of Uzbekistan, a country where AIM-quoted Oxus Goldhas its Amantaytau gold project.
The company, headed by experienced mining figure Richard Wilkins, has set up the foundation with its local partner Amantaytau Goldfields and Westminster International University in Tashkent (the Uzbek capital) to support selected undergraduate and postgraduate students from Navoi Province, where the company has its operation.
The export-encouraging Prince Michael is patron of the foundation, which will also create an English-language learning centre in Zarafshan, the town local to the Amantaytau mining project. Says Wilkins: ‘Oxus is committed to sustainable development in Uzbekistan. By creating this Foundation…we can offer talented young people in the region an opportunity to develop their vocational and linguistic skills, which will bring sustainable advantage to the region.’ Whether it will bring any sustainable advantage to Oxus’s depressed share price remains to be seen.
