Relegation from the Premiership to the Nationwide League during 1999 has hit the Addicks hard, as lower gate receipts and broadcasting revenues impacted on profits. For the 12 months to 30 June 2000, turnover slipped to £11.8m (£16.3m) while losses of £2.8m were incurred (£1.25m profit). A reduction in ticket revenues of nearly £1m resulted from the demotion. However, things are most definitely looking up for the South London outfit under manager Alan Curbishley. Having bounced back to the top flight at the first attempt in June, investors should expect a more solid financial performance in the near future. The club has a formal planning consent for 6,000 additional seats at The Valley which will give it the opportunity to extend the capacity to 26,000. Strategy going forward will be to retain top flight status at all costs in order to benefit from the revenues which will be created when the new TV deal comes into effect in 2001.
