Abacus Polar

Companies: ABU

This electronic component distributor has benefited from suppliers in the industry being wary of reliance on too few distributors. For the year ended 30 September, turnover increased by 42% to £152.6m (£107.2m), while profits at the pre-tax line rose to £15.8m (£7.7m). The board credited buoyant market conditions and growing consolidation within the industry for the gains, with supplier wariness opening up new franchise opportunities. All of the group's operating companies turned profits and 37.5% of sales growth was achieved organically. The largest subsidiary, Abacus Polar, grew by 43%. Of the three acquisitions the group made since the year end, chief executive Brian Murdoch was particularly bullish about the Silicon Concepts purchase. Silicon is a distributor specialising in the design and supply of semiconductor products. The board explained that the acquisition will give Abacus Polar exposure to the fast-growing 'programmable logic market' through its Lattice semiconductor franchise.
